Opened in 1979 in the American Hotel (which had been converted into galleries, studios, and a home for artists), Al’s served as a gathering spot for the downtown art and music scenes. A cross between CBGB's and Cheers, Al’s was considered to be Los Angeles’ “last real rock ‘n roll club” since it was one of the rare spots where bands were allowed to “let loose and go wild.”
