Opened in 1895 as the Italian-American Grocery Company, Little Joe’s was a famous Italian restaurant located in the middle of Chinatown — it was around for so long that Chinatown just built up around it. But still, it remained a bastion of Italian food and culture: high ceilings and regular Joes in shirt sleeves, leather booths, dining rooms with sawdust on the floor and rosy acres of Italian scenes painted on the walls — a cheesy, garlicky haven among the spicy-sweet smells of Chinatown.
