When the St. Charles Speedway opened in 1956, it was a quarter-mile dirt oval speedway in the middle of nowhere. Still, many St. Louis area racing legends honed their skills at the track often referred to as "The Bowl" or "The Charlie Bowl" because of its very high banks and bowl-shaped appearance.
