After opening its first store in 1956 in Hyannis, MA, Zayre quickly became the nation's fifth largest retail chain. At its peak it had 320 stores, and nearly every major market east of the Mississippi River had one. Ironically, in 1977 the company opened the first TJ Maxx, which became so big it eventually became the company's sole focus, hastening Zayre’s demise.
