The Bundeswehr was formed as a West German post-war military force. NYC punk rockers in the 70s and 80s didn’t care about history — they cared about looking mod on the cheap. Military surplus was cheap, and sturdy, and, well…cool. And so the “Bundy” shirt worked its way into the NYC punk fashion milieu.
