Danceteria nightclub opened its doors in 1979 in NYC with a genre-hopping roster of bands, artists, DJs, video installations and events. Madonna began her career there, and artists like The Smiths, Devo, Grace Jones, New Order and countless others performed while Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cyndi Lauper and RuPaul hung out on the regular. Danceteria was a serendipitous collision of culture, art and music; a wildly diverse, creative landscape unlike anyone had ever seen.
