Opened in 1946 and dubbed Pritchett’s Fish Camp by locals, everything about Pritchett’s was designed for the consumption of too much food. In the waiting room, diners would watch cooks plunge wire baskets of dredged fish into gurgling grease pits. Then they were led into one of of 42 private dining rooms, each with a switch that activated a red light over the door to let the waiters know when they needed more food. And the food would come…and come — steaming heaps of pond-raised catfish and oniony hush puppies — and the diners would gluttonously gorge themselves on the dripping deep-fried goodness.
