Established in 1923, Woolworth’s was the first five-and-dime in America, and their luncheonette, with its counter seats, Formica tables, and open kitchen for griddling burgers and making milkshakes, weaved itself into the fabric of American culture. In fact, Woolworth’s Luncheonette played a major role in American de-segregation, as many black sit-ins of the Civil Rights movement occurred at Woolworth’s Luncheonettes.
