Opened in 1935, TG&Y (named after the initials of its founders) was a chain of five-and-dime stores. At its peak, TG&Y had more than 900 stores in 29 states. It was the store where Mom would peruse the fabric department while kids ogled Barbies or Hot Wheels in the toy department. TG&Y’s motto was, “Have what people want at a price they can afford to pay.” And they did.
