Built in 1850 in Madison, the Fess Hotel was “a hotel for the common man” that catered to travelers on the nearby railroad lines and to weekly boarders. The operation, family-owned until 1973, also included a saloon, dining room, barber shop, ice house and a livery that could stable up to 60 horses. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
