Opened in 1971 in River Grove, IL, the hard rock club Thirsty Whale brought in national acts such as Blue Öyster Cult, Molly Hatchet, Foghat, and Cheap Trick. Young local bands would open for the national acts to grow their fan base and sometimes draw the attention of major record companies. If you were to ask a local rock musician about the scene from this era, they would say, “Without The Thirsty Whale, there would never have been a rock scene in Chicago.”
