Opened in 1971 in Brooklyn, the Crazy Eddie consumer electronics chain rose to prominence throughout the Tri-State Region as much for its prices as for its memorable commercials. The pitchman, an unholy mashup of Pee-wee Herman and Donald Trump, would squeeze as many words as humanly possible into his allotted thirty seconds, waving his arms and screaming about amazing deals on VCRs, televisions, or electric fans. At its peak, Crazy Eddie had 43 stores in four states with more than $300 million in sales.
